Grade 5/6 with Ms. fisher
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Term 1 of 2022. This year we have so much to look forward to including swimming in term 1, camp and of course graduation for our grade 6 seniors in term 4. Trish Beardsley will be in the senior classroom for education support and will continue to support your child with their learning needs.
Our Routines
Monday to Thursday will be focused around literacy, numeracy and core knowledge studies. The first two hours (except Thursdays) will be dedicated to literacy where students will participate in daily reviews of previously taught material, spelling and morphology, sentence and grammar work, fluency practise, and shared reading of fiction and non-fiction books. There will be a strong focus on building students background knowledge and explicitly teaching them vocabulary words to aid in the comprehension and understanding of texts. Students will also have a novel study each term where they will listen to engaging texts and develop a repertoire of ways to think about or understand ideas in a variety of contexts. Two to three times per week we will have a writing workshop where we focus on developing our writing craft skills and learn how to put words and sentences together in a compelling way. Technology is such a huge part of our society in the 21st Century and therefore will be incorporated in meaningful ways through podcasts, ebooks, research and by using Microsoft office applications.
During numeracy students will again participate in daily reviews of previously taught material, they will build their number sense and automaticity of number facts and the four operations. Students will choose and use suitable metric and other units for measurement of length, angle, area, volume, capacity and mass. Students will pose questions to collect categorical and numerical data by observation and survey, and represent the data in a variety of ways with and without the use of technology.
In our core knowledge unit in term 1 we will be studying the Maya, Aztec and Inca civilisations and learn about their way of life, their achievements and the discoveries that they made. Students will make comparisons between these three ancient civilisations to other ancient civilisations such as the Australian Aboriginals.
Homework
Students will be expected to read for at least 30 minutes each night and have this signed off in their diary by an adult. Diaries are to be at school every day. Reading materials can be novels, non-fiction texts, articles or any other literature your child will enjoy. In addition to reading your child will also receive maths work each week that will focus on building their number sense and automaticity, or will be revisiting previously taught material to solidify their understanding. Homework will be handed out on Thursdays and students will have a week to complete their work.
Other reminders
Students are still encouraged to bring a piece of fruit, vegetables or other healthy snack into school for munch and crunch. I will continue to have an open-door policy where you are welcome to meet with me before 9:00am and after 3:30pm. I am also available via Class Dojo during business hours and will aim to provide you with classroom updates via this channel where I can. Alternatively, for meetings that may take longer than 5-10 minutes, please message me to arrange a scheduled time.
I look forward to 2022 being a year that all students love and enjoy.
