Grade 3/4 with Mrs Ewings
Welcome to Term 1, 2021. I am sure that we are all hoping for a much better year than we all experienced last year. I am looking forward to an exciting year of uninterrupted learning and watching our children grow and develop in their learning.
There are a few changes to the time table this year and they are as follows;
Assembly
Assembly will be held each Friday at 3:10pm. I welcome all family members and friends to attend.
Chinese
Chinese language classes will now be conducted on Monday morning.
MARC Van
Ms. Kari O'Gorman will now visit our school on Mondays. For the Grade 2/3/4 students this will be their library session so all library books need to be returned to school each Monday.
Clubs
Clubs for students this term commences on Thursday the 18th of February from 2.30-3.30pm.
Specialist Classes
All other specialist classes will be held on Fridays. The teachers and subjects are as follows;
ART - Mrs. Sundqvist
P.E. - Mrs. Ross
RESILIENCE - Miss Williamson
MUSIC - Mrs. Wilson
S.T.E.M - Mrs. Ewings
Inquiry
During Term 1 the Grade Two and Three students will be investigating Aboriginal Culture and their connection to place. The Grade Four students will investigate significant explorers and the roles that they played in opening up Australia and the world.
Homework
Reading
It is vital that children are reading at home as often as possible. I would recommend a minimum of 30 minutes reading at least five times a week. Children can read to an adult or an older sibling and need to have their diary signed each time they read. Grade four students can spend the bulk of this time reading to themselves however it is important that they also read aloud to build their skills in fluency and expression. After you child has read, ask them questions about the story, plot and characters and encourage them to make predictions as to what may happen in the story. Encourage them to find connections between what they are reading and other books, themselves or the world around them.
Spelling
Each week children will have a list of spelling words in their diary to practise and learn. There are many ways that they can practise these words including spelling them aloud, look/say/cover/write/check, writing them in sentences etc etc.
Spelling tests will be conducted on Wednesdays.
Water and Munch 'n' Crunch
It is desirable that every child has a water bottle with them every day. Staying hydrated not only helps their learning but also supports a healthy body.
I am happy for children to graze as they need it throughout the day. Appropriate foods include fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and yogurt (pouches make less mess!). Fruit cups in juice are very messy and can only be eaten at recess or lunch.
As always, I have an open door policy. I strongly believe that a solid working connection between home and school is invaluable in a child's learning and development. Class Dojo is my preferred means of contact during the day and I will endeavour to check it each session. I am nearly always available for a quick catch up before and after school however, should you wish to have a longer conversation about your child I would encourage you to make an appointment for a mutually convenient time.
Here's to a great year for everyone.
Stay safe and well.
