grade prep/1 with mrs Todorov
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome all Prep/Grade 1 students and families of 2019. I look forward to getting to know you all and helping your children grow throughout this year. Although I will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s goals in parent teacher conferences, please feel free to make an appointment with me to discuss your child’s progress at anytime.
Just a small reminder that assembly will continue to take place Monday mornings at 9:00 am and all parents and friends are welcome to attend.
We will commence this term with the theme of, “All about me”. History will be integrated into our classroom lessons to explore our lives, families, cultural diversity and feelings. Students will get to investigate their family tree, how families take different shapes and forms, how to build resilience at school and make good decisions.
This term I will read with students individually to help them develop their reading skills. We will work towards developing strategies that make us good readers. These strategies include; holding the book correctly, looking at the pictures, pointing to words and learning sounds of letters. We strongly encourage students to read every night to a family member or family friend and record this in the school diaries which were sent home in the reader packs. This short activity usually only takes 5 to 10 minutes and is essential for students to practise their reading skills learnt at school. Every Prep and Grade 1 student has a buddy in Grade 4, 5 or 6 who they read to during the week. Students have been excited about this morning routine and have shown great enthusiasm when their buddies come and listen to them read. If anyone would like to volunteer and assist with reading in the mornings, please let me know. This assistance is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Toddlers are welcome to join the fun.
All students in Grade Prep and Grade 1 are showing great engagement when completing maths activities. They enjoy the games and hands on activities we participate in on a daily basis. This term students will develop their number and algebra skills by learning about the value of numbers, counting and different strategies to complete addition and subtraction questions. They will also explore Measurement and Geometry by looking at length, time and 2D shapes.
Munch and Crunch
At 9:30 everyday students participate in, “Munch and Crunch”. During this time, we are all able to eat a small piece of fruit, vegetables such as carrots, cucumber, celery, cheese or other healthy snacks. This small snack helps keep our stomachs full until recess and our minds engaged. Since we are usually listening to a story during this time or continuing our work, it is recommended that snacks such as fruit cups are not packed as these can cause a lot of mess.
Every week students will participate in Art, Health and Physical Education, Library, STEM and Chinese (alternate weeks). I will be teaching Art to the class on Thursdays. Library will be taught on Tuesdays. During library, students are able to borrow a library book, complete activities and explore a range of books. Please note that in order for your child to borrow a book they must bring to school their library bag. Any overdue books must be returned before a new library book can be borrowed. Students will complete PE on Wednesdays and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) on Thursdays with Miss Tabone.
In addition to reading, all students will be sent home with sight words to learn and practise. Sight words are high frequency words that your child reads in their levelled readers everyday. Grade 1 Students will be sent home with spelling words each week. Writing out the words on a daily basis is highly recommended. Students will be assessed on their spelling word list every Friday and a new list will be provided on a weekly basis. If for any reason your child is unable to complete their homework please let me know via a quick note in the student diary. Learning these high frequency words help students become more fluent readers. I look forward to giving certificates to those students who have mastered each coloured sight word list.
Show and Tell Roster
I maintain an open door policy in my classroom and welcome parents and friends to view their child’s work and ask about our day to day work. Please do not hesitate to pay me a visit or send me a quick Dojo message should you have any questions.
I look forward to working with you and helping your child grow throughout their education this year.
