Grade 2/3 with Mrs. ewings
Welcome to the Grade 2 and 3 Classroom.
We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning and development. In our classroom we celebrate difference and encourage tolerance for the thoughts and ideas of others as a means of extending our own thinking. Over the course of their middle primary years our children begin to prepare for their transition into senior school and are encouraged to seek out leadership opportunities and to take increased responsibility for themselves and their learning.
Homework
It is expected that students read at least five nights a week and complete their diary to reflect this. Students have the option to have their diary signed by a parent/guardian or to write a summary sentence in their diary as proof of reading. A summary sentence contains details about character, plot and setting of the section of book that they have read.
Your child should also be encouraged to practise their 2, 5 and 10 times tables on a regular basis.
Water and Munch ‘n’ Crunch
Each child should have a water bottle on their table every day to ensure that they stay hydrated and are able to focus on their learning.
I am happy for students to snack at any time throughout the day so long as their choices are healthy. Appropriate classroom snacks could include fruit and vegetables, cheese or yogurt. Fruit cups can be quite messy and so the children are encouraged to consume these at recess or lunch time.
Literacy
Literacy this year will have a strong focus on phonics, syntax and morphology. Morphology is the study of words and their parts. Morphemes, like prefixes, suffixes and base words, are defined as the smallest meaningful units of meaning. Morphemes are important for phonics in both reading and spelling, as well as in vocabulary and reading comprehension.
Strong focus will also be given to syntax which includes spelling, grammar and punctuation rules. The children will have repeated exposures to these rules in order for them to gain mastery of them.
Phonics is the mastery of the sounds that letters and letter blends make. Mastery in phonics supports reading, spelling and writing.
Numeracy
The numeracy classroom this year will not only focus on the fundamental rules of mathematics but it will also encourage the children to draw on previously learned knowledge and apply it to new problems and situations. We will encourage creative thinking and offer the children complex problems that may have multiple solutions and rules that can be applied to solve them. Our children are growing into a world where entirely new jobs will be created and they will need the thinking skills to solve the problems of the future.

Tuesday - Mrs Ross for P.E.
Thursday – Mrs McLean for Auslan. Mrs East for MARC Van
